Zoe Maat's Profile...
Bio of Zoe Ma'at aka Zoe Matoff Zoe Matoff is the founder and director of the Rhinebeckian Institute for Tarot and Esoterica in Rhinebeck, NY. She also works as business manager to Rachel Pollack, and is associated as a support person with Hudson Valley Seers, a professional group of diviners, authors and teachers in the Hudson River Valley comprised of Rachel Pollack, Cait Johnson, Tom Cowan and A.T. (Tad) Mann. As an adorable child and adolescent, Zoe joined a book club for lovers of the paranormal and met "George" her Ouija board mentor who advised her that she would be successful. Not until her work with the Institute does Zoe feel that she found any semblance of her life's work. Her dedication to the Community of Light (her words for those who seek a deeper knowledge and experience of Life -- her name means "Life”) brought her to seek a supportive relationship to others of her community. The means for that is the Institute, where Zoe likes to take a back or at least side seat to the wonderful presenters and participants who gather for the events. Her profound excursion with all things Tarot and esoteric began in 1995 in San Francisco, at Fields Bookstore on Polk Street and at a Roman Catholic church (!) where she was a sacristan, breaking through the stained glass ceiling as that church’s first female sacristan in its 100-year history. Ask Zoe to tell you about her Dianic initiation during those church years! She acquired a Tarot mentor – Jack Hurley, creator of The New Tarot Deck, the deck that was used at Esalen in Big Sur during the 1970’s. Within months, Zoe was introduced to the vital West Coast Tarot community through the auspices of Thalassa’s Bay Area Tarot Symposium (BATS) and then at PantheaCon, the country’s largest pagan conference that gathers every Presidents’ Day weekend in the San Francisco Bay Area. Zoe continues to work with the Tarot through the Builders of the Adytum Mystery School correspondence course and in her work for Rachel Pollack. In 2006, Zoe established The Rhinebeckian Institute for Tarot and Esoterica. (“Want to know how to get an Institute? You say ‘I have an Institute’” – and then you do the joyful work with wonderful people) . After a successful first year sponsoring Mary K. Greer (The Secret Tradition in Waite’s Minor Arcana) , Johanna Gargiulo Sherman (Psychic Development: The Animal Guardian and Tarot) Tom Cowan (The Anglo-Saxon Runes and Runework) and Rachel Pollack (The Major Arcana, a Tarot Intensive) Zoe is working with such notables as Robert Place (Vampires!, Tarot and Alchemy) , James Wells (Tarot for Manifestation and The Answer is in the Question) , Rachel (The Minor Arcana Intensive: Cups thrugh Pentacles) , Johanna (The Animal Guardian and Past Lives) , Sabina Magliocco (The Roots of Stregheria and the Enchanted Worldview) and Elizabeth Hazel (Charms, Amulets and Talismans) . To this list will be added Ancient Egyptian Spirituality and The Thoth Tarot (if she can find an available and illustrious teacher) . Her signature says it all: Zoe Matoff Founder and Director The Rhinebeckian Institute for Tarot and Esoterica (R.I.T.E.) -- The Institute brings Sages to Seekers on such esoteric paths as Tarot, Alchemy, Astrology, Astrotheology, Hermeticism, I Ching, Kabbalah, Magick, Eastern and Western Mysticism, Numerology, Runes, and more!
