Erica S.'s Profile...

I have been walking a pagan path and practicing magick as a solitary for about 8 years. I bring my experience finding my own way in this path, along with over 10 years experience in education for all developmental levels, professional storytelling, music and writing to my passion for pagan spirituality and what I believe it offers to the world at this critical time. I currently work full time as a liberal religious education professional.

In 2009 I started a peer group called the Moonlit Grove Initiates, which met for a good five years. I started it because I was solitary, not necessarily by choice, but because I needed spiritual community but initially couldn't not find one that felt safe as a beginner.

Schools and covens seemed to be fiercely tradition-bound, and I wasn't ready to be limited so early on. I struggled to find a teacher or mentor I truly felt I could trust, often feeling frustrated because the information I encountered did not seem to meet the research standards I was accustomed to.
Many magickal concepts are often introduced in both groups and texts the way a socialite would drop names, but without context or further explanation to trace where they'd come from and why they had become "standard." As I've slowly become more connected with the wider pagan community, I have met many knowledgeable people I admire, but I have come to understand I am an oddball student when it comes to learning.

(The hands-on, strictly practical approach is really a plus for a lot of people, but for people like me who tend to lead with the cerebral, trying to find a footing in any faith can be a real challenge, let alone one that expects you to be able to do magick!)

A few of us self-named "initiates" had our first experiences with group energy work, ritual, spellwork, spirit communion, and personal spiritual practice through the courage we gained by supporting each other.
It was a great experience. MGI went through periods of flux, and I personally struggled with the liminal space of being essentially a leader among people I considered friends and spiritual family.

I'm grateful for the lessons we learned, and especially those that I have been able to reflect upon when I think about what it means to commit to leadership, even when you don't know if you're up to the task.

We've all pretty much gone our separate ways, onto our own paths which have solidified over the time we got to know each other. Several of us are still friends, and a few of us have gone on to find a spiritual home in other groups.

Now, after about a year or two of persistent, relentless nudging I have not been able to shake, I am responding to what I can only recognize as a calling to once again, create a learning environment for those who find it a little harder to get on the bandwagon than others.

I say it is a calling because I've experienced it before and because it's the only way I can explain the nudge, not because I feel I am particularly gifted in any way. I'm certainly not the most experienced of practitioners; however, being an educator, mentor and coach is something I'm actually quite good at.

The term "next generation witchcraft" is in deference to Peter Grey, a pagan author and a powerfully prophetic voice, who has put into words what I and I am certain many others have long experienced as we've searched for leadership and a paganism that makes sense to us here and now, beyond the walls of what sometimes seems like a very internally-focused wider pagan community.

(You can read an article by him here, and see a video of a presentation on this subject:

With careful respect to the pioneers, living and passed, who blazed a trail to make it easier for those like me to follow, now we find ourselves in the same place they once did. We are having to realize that we are, essentially, the witches we're looking for, whether we want to be or not.

I'm currently designing the first of a series of courses that will be launched online. The courses are founded on peer-to-peer learning. The content is designed to have the rigor of academic coursework with an emphasis on critical thinking, but balanced with opportunities for group projects and discussion to make the workload more manageable for real-life schedules.
