Falcon River's Profile...
I am a Dianic Wiccan Priestess and my chosen ministry is the Guardian Path.
I am deeply thankful to have been able to help create and support women's ritual circles in the Dianic Wiccan tradition since 1976. In 1999, my life partner, Ruth Barrett, and I co-founded Temple of Diana, Inc. where we are the core faculty for The Spiral Door Women's Mystery School of Magick and Ritual Arts. As part of my path of service, I am passionately committed to helping awaken women to the mysteries of the guardian path as embodied by the matron Goddess of our tradition, Diana/Artemis, Guardian of women and nature. Through this ministry, I am blessed to make my living teaching practical energetic and magical skills for daily life in hands on, experiential workshops around the country.
I grew up in the Appalachian mountains of southern West Virginia, climbing and singing with the trees, crawling into every cave I could find, and riding every horse I could swing a leg over. From my mother, and her mother, her mother before her, I inherited what they call in the mountains, " the sight" or "second sight". I believe it was my poor mother's only way of keeping track of me. She used to say she hoped I had six children just like me. Early on, I decided not to have ANY!
When I was a young girl my Granny Forrest and Aunt Beulah taught me traditional magic and plant medicine, everything from how to birth babies to cursing your neighbor's cow. My Aunt Beulah was especially good at love charms and curses for unfaithfulness. Young gentlemen for miles around knew of her services and either sought her out desperately, or avoided her like the plague! My Uncle Herschel inherited his mother's Tsalagi (Cherokee) heart, and taught me the ways of the forest. He could not read his own name, but he could read the forest floor like the daily newspaper. Uncle Herschel used to disappear into the forest for weeks at a time with nothing but his gun, a buck knife and an old wool army blanket rolled up and slung over his shoulder. He taught me how to listen to the trees, how to see the days ahead in the smoke of a pipe, and how to expand my vision for miles around to find game willing to become food. Many hours we spent together waiting until the "lifelight" had risen from the body of a long dead pheasant, before we would pick it up and head home. Years would pass before I realized that everyone could not see this "light" nor notice its passing. Uncle Herschel would not touch a creature until it's spirit had fully left the body and we had shared smoke to honor it.
By 1975 I had moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where I was among the first women to fight our way into the apprenticeship program of the "United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners" in that state. I chose to enter the cabinet-making division of the union instead of the commercial division, as I was more interested in becoming a cabinetmaker. Sadly I was not able to complete the 4-year journey program. At 3 years and 9 months an altercation over inappropriate touch (his grabbing my crotch from behind, while I had a hammer in my hand) sent a fellow worker to the emergency room without his front teeth and I was fired! None the less, from that time on, I have enjoyed creating practical, magical tools and furnishings for Earth-loving households. My creations are always crafted using lumber from discarded/recycled sources and/or harvested from willing tree friends in responsible, sustainable and appropriate ways. Next, I spent 20 years in private practice as a Massage Therapist working with humans, horses and dogs. A 1983 graduate of the Heartwood School of Massage Therapy, I also studied sports massage at the Chicago School of Massage Therapy and completed the St. John course in Neuro-Muscular Therapy through the St. John Institute. For several years I was extremely fortunate to be able to study with Linda Tellington-Jones and Robin Hood, learning the Tellington Touch/TEAM Techniques for working with horses and other companion animals to facilitate their healing and training.
Although no longer a hunter, I am an avid archer, and a Level II instructor/member of the National Association for the Development of Archery and the National Archery Association. Currently I am researching the mounted archery techniques of the Amazons and training myself and my Appaloosa mare, Flame, to do mounted archery….Stay tuned for progress reports!
