I consider myself a most fortunate person because I was called to the craft in no uncertain terms. It was a powerful, mystical, paranormal experience that left no doubt about my course. The experience changed my life so dramatically that my family responded by questioning my transmogrification. I had to ease people into the idea that I was becoming a witch, especially my wife. Most thought it was something I had stumbled upon and just wanted to try out. Before this I had been Buddhist and became quite adept at meditation and following a philosophy of unattachment, witnessing without judgment and radiating unconditional love. I had also become a Reiki level III healer. I am still both of those things but they now fall within the context of the craft.
The calling was very special and while it humbled me and filled me with gratitude for the blessing it also left me feeling odd and out of sorts with the world of the mundane. Eventually I was compelled to seek out my community and so I made a pilgrimage of sorts to Circle Sanctuary near Madison, Wisconsin. The warm welcome I received there and the sense of belonging was like a soothing tonic to my soul. My place was now clear and the joy I felt was deep and satisfying.
I am also a legally ordained minister with The Universal Life Church. Anyone can obtain this ordination but I would not have done it if I did not feel that there was something deep within me to give to others.
Being a witch often means putting ones self at odds with the general public and even some Pagans. We are certainly misunderstood, feared, sometimes hated, marginalized, ostracized and dismissed. I can't help feel that the spirits who called me to the craft believe that there is a place for me to do good.
Since my calling I have been tested in many ways, challenged, frightened and attacked. I have learned that being a witch is not easy but nothing will divert me from this path.
