The poet in his soul

I recently had a dream
Of my father lying in bed,
Saying his goodbye's
Knowing soon he would be dead.
And he passed to me a token
Of great value it was clear,
Yet, I did not want this gift,
So I spoke for him to hear:
"All I want from you today
Is a talent or gift, I pray,
Which I promise to hold dear
And thereby feel your presence near"
"Give to me a part of you
Which is best and always true
For I'll cherish and uphold
This great gift" -is what I told.
After time, for me to think,
I gathered paper and fetched some ink,
And on the pages began to write
How I felt about that night.
'twas only then that I could see
That the gift he gave to me
Was a part of him so whole,
It was the poet in his soul.
