Naming Words

Naming Words
Created Sunday, 1st Jan 2006 (Korycany, Czech Republic)
I’ve heard so many times, ‘What’s in a name?’ ‘A rose by any other will still smell the same’; But, I ask you, what is the big deal? Does giving a name to something make it anymore real? Now ponder this, if you please, How can you read this line with such ease? It seems to me that we’ve got it wrong, Reality’s not in the name of a plant, creature, song. We only give a name to that which already is And why, I ask you, do we bother with this? Is it to make it more stable in our own world? Does calling it something result in wisdom unfurled? Or is it only to identify, describe or to ‘know’? And if something is nameless, where does it go? Does it become unknown, a mystery or lie, Does it become something unreal to you and I? There is power in a name; I believe this to be true Just as I believe when we give a name, we give power, too. But why, may I ask, do we name at all? Is it to empower, enchant, realize or enthrall? Does a name mean existence; does it make something real? Does it result in something we can hear, see or feel? Is the power in the name, or just in the word? Simply a random sound someone uttered, which you heard And now forever associate with specified meanings Of a creature, plant, mineral, wave or feelings. Is a name just a word? Is a word just a name? For me, I think language will never be the same. I think a name may be just a word, but a word is much more And a richness of words never leaves one poor. Words may seem to be simple words or sounds, But their power is like ripples, growing large and round. It may commence with something incredibly small Just symbols and sounds, not very much at all But these can grow and expand to do many things, Bring joy or sorrow; make heroes and kings. Sounds and symbols arranged in a certain way Can result in many things, can bring night and day, Can steal a life; can make life anew, Can challenge, shapeshift, transform and inspire, too. Certain words and phrases can make others cry Rearrange these, and they can lift them to fly. They can offer new hope, or extinguish hope’s flame, They can save a life, or mortally maim. Words can give pain, nightmares and fears Can make someone feel small or reduce them to tears, But they can bring peace, smiles and laughter too Make dreams, fantasy and magic become real to you, They can help you explore deep seas and fly with birds There is no end to the fantastic power of words. Of course, it can be a weapon skillfully misused Can bring terrible harm, leaving one scarred and bruised, As with all great things, it is a double-edged sword, Its vast potential should never leave one bored. A name is a word which can inspire many things And it’s up to you what each name brings: Some names will seem good, and others seem bad Some can make you angry or fearful, and others glad; For a name is one very special word, Not simply a creation you once heard, For a wide variety of words encircle every name, And for each person, no circle is ever the same. Words and names are unique to everyone And can be used in many ways: riddle, song, question, pun; Plus, a great bonus is that there is no limit at all This immense power of words will respond to anyone’s call, New words are invented everyday And no one can take this power away. Although a rose by any name will smell just as sweet, And will not alter its scent to resemble smelly feet, The word ‘Rose’ itself is so much more: Love, romance, pain, glee, tears, dreams, awe. There is no end to what ‘Rose’ may bring And this will apply to everything. There is no end to words at all No barriers, fences, chains, locks or wall, And the way you use this power is up to you, There is no end to the wonders you can do. I love these words to help my spirit soar And I know I will love them forever more.
Author's Notes: This was just a quick poem I wrote while in a rather sleep-deprived state on the eve of the first day of 2006, while at my grandfather's place in the small village of Korycany (Czech Republic) where, despite being awake for over 24 hours, I simply couldn't get to sleep and just, generally, started to think about weird things lol. Curiously, despite being in an almost zombie-mode, I was able to write this poem quickly and easily, with my ideas and opinions developing while I was writing, which may explain why this particular poem is a little more jumpy than my others. Oh well, I hope you liked it anyway. Stay bright, keep smiling and never forget to have FUN! :)
