Once upon a Windy Day

by Whiteheart
 Age Group: Adult

Once upon a Windy Day
Once upon a windy day, two boys went out to play, to a dark forest not far away But the wind did blow and blow and clouds came in so dark and so low Soon the rain came pouring down, leaving large puddles on the ground.
The boys took cover under an old Gum tree; shivering and shaking and as wet, as wet could be.
Then a funny thing happened on that dreadful day, the branches on that old gum tree started to shake and sway. and covered the boys like a warm soft blanket of hay.
A whispering voice, like a gentle breeze that seem to come from the trees "Stay with us, until you’re warm and dry and the sun returns to the sky."
We will tell you of stories of long ago, please stay do not go Both boys did agree for they were still cold and wet as wet could be. One of the boys did say for this is so neat,
" I did not know that trees could speak."
In reply, a gum did say,
" for we always have, but people no longer come this way" No longer do they sit beneath on the softness of our leaves, And listen to the birds, sweet song. And help our young grow tall and strong,
Or care for the creatures on the ground or smell the flowers all around.
For a long time now we have stood alone.
Just the occasional scruffy dog comes to bury a bone. Or a bird to sing its heartfelt song, so loud, so clear and strong, Only for no one to come and listen, to what magic this world has given.
No longer do we feel the native song of the didgeridoo by a billabong.
Or touch the smoke of a camp fire. As it twists through the forest rising higher and higher.
Or a friendly lizards that use to climb our branches to catch a summer breeze Or the Koala Bear to rest and eat our leaves.
The boys were very quite, not knowing what to say,
for they knew why these things no longer come this way.
From the television, papers and books they read,
how could they tell the trees, how the world now is built on greed.
For there is no time to watch the trees sway to and foe Or plant some flowers and watch them grow.
No time for children’s foolish games, just to curse it when rains,
Till it is too late for them to run in the rain, to old too weak to brittle to lame. How could they tell this forest what the humans have done? How they have poisoned the earth from which they have come.
They made a pledge that every week, that they will return to the forest so they can speak. And they did keep this pledge forever on.
And so did the next generations to this day Sunday 2001,
