The dance goes on

I sit alone in a vast and starless sky
Upon a rock, on a calm and windless sea
No distinct shape appears to attract the eye
The safety of any shore appears forlorn
To claim the present I sail into the past
To reset the point of first deviation
Finding that point appears a thankless task
The starting gates are many, and unmarked
The trails branch and reconnect, then split apart
In mindless patterns of disordered order
They tear and tear and heal and mend the heart
The feed again upon their own despair
People impact upon me, then disappear
Though some remain to mine out their impressions
These I have to face armed only with the fear
That their approval might lead to my surrender
Yet I yearn to make a bridge to someone
Share my rock, be no more alone
Yet intimacy with these people I still shun
In case they fail me, and reopen dark despair
So I start and stop, and start again all over
The past invades my present to my shame
As a garden of gold that has become just clover
My use is gone, ineptitude remains
So this madness continues to brood within me
Am I the one person or two or three or more
When from this serpents maze will I be free
The decisions made, the waiting still goes on
Will I have the heart and soul to follow]
The trail, accepting whatever it may reveal
Or will my strength turn out to be just hollow
The only refuge the nightmare of my dreams
Author's Notes: this is a poem about the struggles I have with being both Bi-Polar and the survivor of abusive parents.
