I am the river

I am the river
running strong
after the release of a winter’s rain
See how my heart beats wildly
against the rock
How my tears spill over the banks
that even the ducks huddling in the grass
keep their watchful distance
I am relentless
I roar a battle cry
The colour of my eyes dark
The secrets of my soul held firmly under
My journey today for me
I cleanse the stagnant memories of misuse
from my being
and remember
how free I am
Beholden to no one
Through the grace of my love
I shall again hold the dear children paddling
The makeshift sailing ships
laughing down my rapids
The plastic I shall catch in the reeds between stones
So patiently
But not today
Today is for me
To remember
all the stories
that have been sung
since the beginning
Let them all cry out in unison
Permeate my soul
To be sung
once again
in a new way
when the sun is out
shining stars
and the reflection
is peaceful
and the pool
clear and open
and the banks inviting
one to share
But not today
