Let's Play Pretend

Let's play pretend, pretend no body's here
To use and abuse us, to yell and yell
About stuff we know nothing about
Let's play pretend, pretend we don't care
bout' the words people say, the things people scream
things that are whispered from behind out backs
Let's play pretend, pretend we can't see them
the laughing cold faces, that follow us
wherever and whenever we go
Let's play pretend, pretend we are happy
content to lie, about the darkness we've seen
faces we know, places we've been
Let's play pretend, pretend the shadow aren't real
the world is alright, to sit back, relax
to act as though nothing and everything is good
Let's play pretend, pretend to listen
to the voices of beings who imitate caring
so that no one suspects that they don't
Let's play pretend, pretend to understand
the tears she is shedding, for the child of which
she knows nothing, and never will
Let's play pretend, pretend to know why
Everyone else, is playing pretend too
