POETS' NIGHT (with apologies)
Like droplets of cream drifting in a sea of coffee
One by one they rise and speak their piece,
Artful careless dun-hued earthen costume,
Humble, self-effacing, each unique.
No odysseys, no swords in stone, no fantasy,
No star-crossed lovers, princesses or queens:
Just Harlequin in autumn-tinted motley
And Columbine in mustard-coloured dreams
Where kitchens merge with lands of ancient mythos,
Where pain and passion torment our humanity,
Where gardens bloom with pumpkins, beans and roses
And commonplace is etched in acid clarity.
But what of those who witness this commission?
They also serve who only sit and listen.
