When the men in the dog food factory
Told the Computer
How many cans they'd sold that year
The computer told them back
That there weren't that many dogs
In the country.
Which may be the first recorded incidence
Of social comment by a machine.
Author's Notes: This goes back when I was a travelling chansonnier — coffee-houses, church-basements and bars, where I was privileged to meet a lot of interesting men and women. I particularly enjoyed performing in a bar in a small Ontario city where there was a dog food factory. The recent TV commercials for dog food fortified with special nutrients for seniors (dogs, that is) has moved
me to bring this out of the dog-food closet.
Author's Location: Gabriola Island, British Columbia
