STATUES
Men of Bronze and Men of Stone
One of each from every generation, every war
Stand in public parks, masquerade as art
Surrounded by their outworn tools of death
Commissioned by the men who didn't fight
To celebrate the glory of their war.
In stone is carved one man, the nation's hero
Modeled as he'd like to be remembered
Carved the way we wish that he had lived.
In bronze is cast the single face of many
In bronze the untold thousands who were slaughtered
Everyman, the faceless tired hero
Cast the way we wish that he had died.
Men of bronze and men of stone
One of each from every generation, every war
Dressed up in the costumes of their station
Men of Stone are dressed in clothes for living
Men of Bronze are dressed in clothes for dying
The fashions of the day.
Author's Notes: We create war memorials for two kinds of hero ---
the ones who did the fighting and the dying
and the ones who gave the orders from their
bunkers and offices behind the lines.
