To an ANCIENT GODDESS

by Ted MacGillivray
 [WVox Sponsor]
 Age Group: Adult

To an ANCIENT GODDESS
Granite eyes bruised by wind-blown sand And washed by centuries of stormy tears You gaze upon a flickering twilight landscape Where swirling moons streak by in heartbeat space And stars glow dimly in a constant dusk And season cycles melt from spring to winter In the turning of a hand. It is a miracle That generations of the tiny creatures, No taller than your ankle, even conceived you, Never mind constructing you from quarried Stone, their only tools their naked hands.
By labor imbued with their collective divinity Champion of all their common dreams Embodying the sum of all their will You changed the pattern of the vagrant winds And moved the clouds that drift before the sun To nourish fields of grain with gentle showers And make the bitter winters less severe. And so you watched their cities rise and crumble And mourned the trees retreating to the mountains. Only seldom children bring you flowers: Your strength to sway the winds is almost gone.
Yet now new people come from distant places To marvel at your makers’ victory Of bare hands over stone to build a lasting Image of their love and their devotion. Drawing inspiration from your grandeur And making flashing images for memory They take your icons home with their returning And spread your fame for all the world to know. Thus millions now will grant you newfound power To alter once again the winds’ direction And make the fields and forest bloom anew.
