by Ted MacGillivray
Age Group: Adult
Strolling through the scattered autumn leaves,
Oak and maple, yellow, red and brown,
The prince consults his golden timepiece (wound
Sometime each day by silent, unseen slaves) ,
And sees himself his grandsire picking through
Decaying corpses on a battlefield,
His steel-shod, armored horse disquiet at
The beauty and bouquet of aging flesh.
His the field and his the day, and yet
He wonders idly why he has no thought
Or feeling for that refuse on the ground
Who fought and died to win for him the game.
But after all he'd owned them: they were his
To use or spend or squander as he chose.
