A Soldier's Prayer
by Night's Child
Age Group: Adult
Duty calls I must obey,
Packed and ready I leave today.
For distant lands to roam,
Praying each night I see Home.
Should I fail though my efforts best,
to you I charge this noble quest.
In gathering shadow be the light,
Defend the weak uphold the right.
My Lord calls I humbly obey,
Earthly coils I shed today.
Cast no tears upon my tomb,
My soul at peace I've returned home.
Author's Notes: This came to me over a period of years. The first stanza was as I prepared to deploy overseas for the umpteenth time, and the last two stanzas came to me as I stood saluting fallen soldiers during a ramp service.
