The VALLEY of KINGS

The VALLEY of KINGS
Along the tree-line avenue in royal triumph ride
My sword and sceptre in my hand, the cheering crowds on every side
Last of my line, unwilling crown from failing hands to me passed down
The royal standard is mine.
My father's word ruled in the land, a royal dynasty he planned,
My father's word is my command.
My royal brothers' hearts are stilled, their folded hands longer toil
Their bodies rest beneath the soil of the Valley of Kings,
The Valley of Kings. (alone)
Between my subject's cheering lines I nod my royal head
And smile my blessings to them all where once before my brothers bled.
My brothers passed this way before me, first in triumph then in death,
And now I search each face in turn
And will my eyes to find the one beneath whose coat there lurks a gun
And the flash of smoke that hides the sun
To end a dynasty of rule by men like me, unwilling fool
Sworn to power though still a child
My fate to meet a stranger's face, to feel the chill of death's embrace
A flash of smoke, then take my place in the Valley of Kings
In the Valley of Kings (alone)
History will claim me and tell the way I died,
My name engraved in lasting stone, a wave in times relentless tide
My guards surround me weapons drawn
But can they stop the gambit pawn
The hidden masters' en passent
With 30 silver phrases paid to raise his hand against my life
With a bomb, or a gun or --- (bloody knife)
While millions mourning weep and pray they'll carry me one final day
Down this tree-lined Avenue to the Valley of Kings

Author's Notes: An homage to the mythical dynasties of the Egyptian Amenhotep IV, Akhnaton and Tutenkamen, and the American John, Robert and Ted Kennedy, who, though imperfect as we all are, tried to change their societies, and suffered for it.
