Star Traveler

Star Traveler
Out upon the cosmic wind they sent me as a child, Dressed in steel with lightning boots, a thousand light- years at a stride, And I traveled, and I traveled, far beyond a thousand suns Long forgotten in the distance the place where morning rises. And I’ve walked a thousand planets and I’ve searched a thousand moons: I’ve seen leaf-veins carved in fossil rock were not a leaf or lichen grew — Gone the gentle grass that answers when the morning breezes whisper. And on a few I’ve seen a trace of straight lines in the sand, Crumbling stone, corroding steel erased by time’s relentless hammer, And on some the sun burned low.
Now I’m back to tell my children — grandchildren many times removed The answers to the questions their parents trusted me to fathom: And I’m old now, and I’m old now, and my hair is thin and gray, And the children I grew up with generations gone in silence. And I’ve climbed a thousand mountains and I’ve searched a thousand plains I’ve seen leaf-veins carved in fossil rock where not a leaf or lichen grew — Gone the gentle grass that answers when the morning breezes whisper. And on a few I’ve seen a trace of straight lines in the dust — Crumbling stone, corroding steel returned to chaos as they must, And the lamp of life burns low.
I’ll find a place that’s warm and sheltered, by the sea, Far beyond the poisoned cancer of the city’s madness, And I’ll wait there. And I’ll wait there for the Gods to go away From the image of their failure, and when I sh*t I’ll pray. And I’ll wed a thousand oceans and I’ll seed a thousand waves: I’ll dream leaf-veins carved in fossil rock were not a leaf or lichen grows: I’ll dream the gentle grass that answers when the morning breezes whisper. And on this earth I’ll leave a trace of straight lines in the soil — Crumbling bone, corroding flesh to feed my children’s timeless hunger, And I’ll start the dance anew.

Author's Notes: Two scientists claim to have sent neutrinos through the earth faster than the speed of light -- which Einstein said was impossible. Neutrinos were originally thought to have only velocity and spin, buy no mass, which would make them metaphysical, so when science found that they *did* have mass, I went through a religious crisis that almost destroyed my faith. But only almost, and I remain an unapologetic Pagan. And if Einstein was right, an astronaut going to explore, say, Alpha Centauri, would spend 40 years in space while centuries would pass on earth.
In this piece the astronaut happens to be a male.
