Wings To Fly
I'm standing at a crossroads with my knapsack at my feet,
Snowflakes fall like petals moist with dew.
Looking to the eastward where the sky and Prairie meet,
Alone and cold, I stand and think of you.
(I) left to find the rainbow's end – no way that I could stay –
Now I'm half a continent away,
Lord, had I wings to fly.
Looking to the Eastward, I'm midwife to the sun
As he's born again from out the womb of night.
Long time I've been waiting, but his labors have begun
And soon the day will blossom into light.
Wonder where I'm going and I wonder where I've been,
Wonder what the changeling day may bring.
Wonder if this winter land will ever turned to spring.
Lord, had I wings to fly.
Now the sky is getting lighter, and the snow has turned to rain.
Sun hangs red and veiled beyond the mist.
The things I should have told you seem to echo in my brain
And my lips recall last time that we kissed.
Now the weeping sky sheds the bitter tears that I
Learned long ago to discipline and dry.
All roads lead away from yesterday –
Lord, had I wings to fly.
Author's Notes: But of course it applies to any morning on the Road -- especially the ones when you've not slept well. One of my aims in performance is to keep Pagan imagery and metaphor in common use.
