Poem - Peace

PEACE©
I wandered down the pathway
Through the Mountains of the Moon
Crossed the swollen Wolven River
Beside my valley home
Galloped to the courtyard
Dismounted, unbarred the door
Crossed the darkened thresh hold
Put away my tools of war
I cleaned my battered shield
Sharpened sword then dagger to
Oiled and unstrung my bow
And hung them on my wall
Leaned my quiver and my spear
In the corner beside my bed
Shrugged out of my armor
And left it where it lay
Lit a dozen candles
Set the fire in its place
And cooked a frugal supper
Then laid my head to rest
I dreamed of battles fought and lost
Not just the ones we won
And of all the friends that perished
In the glory that’s called war
On waking to the morning sun
I shed a tear or two
Of the years that I had wasted
From not being here with you
For your grave rests upon the plain
‘Neath the apple tree
You, the price I paid for peace
Your love just a memory
I would give all the treasure
Held by every King
To hold you in my war scarred arms
And feel your breath upon my cheek
To hear your laugh and your song
To feel you next to me
You, the price for other’s peace
But there is no peace for me
