Poem - Our Children

Our Children©
Soft white froth upon the shore
Leaves patterns there within the sand
Like footsteps of our newborn child
Leave loving memories in our minds
We crave to see our children grow
Strong beneath the warm bright sun
To match the footsteps gone before
Of other parent’s daughters, sons
Sometimes the laughter ends too soon
What’s left behind are grief and tears
Of questions that just ask the “why”
About all the “ifs” and “ands” and “buts”
We share the sorrow, loss and pain
And offer thanks for who they were
Members of that bright red line
Who stood courageously between light and dark
They gave a gift that warriors give
Their lives in service to us all
Wrapped with courage, justice, truth
Tied up tight with bravery’s bow
Their footsteps will echo now
Down the lonely years to come
Within the hearts of family, friends
And all the other souls they touched
That thin red line is smaller now
For they have gone to unearthly rest
But I would have my country know
That they were all our children to
In soft remembrance of that day
Gently hold your child tonight
Share their laughter and their pain
And offer thanks for all their love
In memory of the four RCMP who so recently
gave their lives for their fellow Canadians.
