Poem - The Rock

THE ROCK
I have a friend that calls to me
Just a rock down by the sea
Buried in the fine grained sand
He waits so patiently
He offers me a place to sit
When I need to pause a bit
And think of life and what it means
It’s in and outs and all its dreams
I watch and listen to the sea
From my perch upon this rock
See the kelp pulled to and fro
As the tide comes in, turns, then goes
I sit and watch the gulls at play
Much like I did in younger days
When life was simple not complex
When life was shallow with no depth
Now that I am old and worn
Like the rock on which I sit
Both battered by the wind and rain
I wonder what awaits me yet
Will happiness and peace abound
Or like the rock, will I drown
As the tide comes surging in
Tossed and torn, never found
And eventually, to be washed away
To come again another day
Never to find my rock, my friend
Who had become fine grains of sand...
