Poem - First Light

First Light
Scudding clouds draped the moon
Within its circled, pearly haze
Wind sighed amongst the twisted stumps
Shadows mocked each bleary gaze
Mud and filth and deaths sweet stench
Is the bargain of the day
As snipers rule the trenches
From dawn till nighttime’s sway
Nighttime is the silent gift
A time for soul’s sweet rest
To measure courage for the dawn
Against the dawn’s bright kiss
Restless sighs bore down the line
Filled with muttered curse or two
Sharpened steel gleamed in morning light
Gently touched by morning dew
Lighting lit the sky
And thunder filled the air
Whistles sounded in the morn
And sad death abounded there
Through the wire, up the hill
To gun’s staccato roar
Sighing, gently falling
As leaves upon the moor
This hill they sought was just a hill
Once kissed by sun and sky
This hill they took was just a hill
And no one questioned why
For soldiers march to different drums
Then either you or I
First light was not a blessing
Just a time to live or die
So when you’re caressed by morning light
And blessed by morning dew
Think of those who win your peace
And pay death’s price for you
Think of those who took that hill
In a land so far away
T'was at a place called Vimy
That those Canadians saved the day
They poured their blood on foreign soil
That we may rest content
Remembering them in silent reverence
On a chill November's day
