Poem - Shadow Warrior

SHADOW WARRIOR
T’was early in the morning
On a summer’s day
The sun had just kissed the earth
With it’s warming rays
The mists were just receding
Off the valley’s green clad floor
When a warrior crested Volgur’s Ridge
Within the Mountains of the Moon
He was footsore and so weary
For the Journey was so long
His clan mates all had left him
As each had reached their homes
One long year of battle
Keeping back the Dark
One long year of waiting
To begin the homeward march
For the Dark was always cruel
Its teeth as sharp as knives
It worried at your mind and heart
And beat against the soul
No quarter ever given
Through sword or magick’s grace
Just hack and thrust, stand or die
As clan circle outward faced
Dragons roared and spit their flame
Within this hellish pall
While his clan mates fell about him
Each calling out Her name
A battle won a battle lost
A day felt like a year
Time lost all its meaning
Filled with hope and then with fear
Blood and gore the victory flag
Mates lost to war’s sad rules
All to keep the magick safe
Within Her Mountains of the Moon
He looked down in wonder
From high upon that ridge
This shadow of a man
Who’d earned the right to live
With his family in the vale
Just an hour away
To hear his children’s laughter
And feel wife’s warm embrace
To lay aside the tools of war
Take up the tools of peace
To bide a time in love and light
As the man he used to be
A shadow warrior scarred and bent
Under war’s harsh and cruel blows
Once again a man of peace
Awaiting Clan Chief’s call
