Poem - Friends

Friends
The moon reflects off the new fallen snow
And lends a touch of mystic grace to unclothed trees
In the distance can be heard the mournful chorus of the coyote
As they hunt over the frozen landscape of my farm
Within these surreal moments I feel the touch of my old friends
Fleeting but wondrous in this moment of time
Their leaving has left an emptiness that is hard explain
Real in its pain but accepted as time moves forward
No spoken word ever passed between us
We shared lives separate but bound together by love
We sat quietly sharing the peace of star filled nights
And the excitement of days in the fields and forest
They would lie peacefully beside me
By my bed, chair or couch
Walk and run with me on our walks
Happy to be just who they were
I miss their gentle brush against my leg
The feel of their coats against my hand
They both came to me unwanted and unloved
They both left me, heads in my lap and my tears on my cheek
Not just dogs but friends loved and missed
An intricate part of my life now unfulfilled
For Cleo and Riot, old friends sadly missed, but running with Her packs, happy and young once again
