Poem - Dark Shadows

Dark Shadows
I have never seen the mountains in the springtime
Nor felt their warming summer breeze
Never looked upon their autumn colours
Nor felt their bitter, winter winds
Never saw the eagle while it was soaring
Over green- clad valley floors
Never heard the bugle of the elk
As it trumpets just before the dawn
Never tasted their cool waters
As they flow towards the sea
Never fished upon their rivers
Never sat beside their still blue lakes
But I have lived upon the desert
Felt its wind blown sand upon my face
Heard the distant sound of thunder
That artillery can make
Heard the cries of injured children
As their mothers lie dying in the dirt
Tasted the acrid taste of cordite
As it gently wafts upon the breeze
Felt the blast of grenade and mortar
Saw hands reaching out in quiet despair
Saw broken bodies huddled ‘round me
As I cried my silent tears
Dark shadows now surround me
As I search for happiness and peace
Shades of darkness are the colours
That that hide behind my battered face
I face this quiet desolation
And hide my angry, bitter soul
I’ll abide in this living hell forever
Until my Goddess calls me home
