Butterflies & Grampies

by Dragonchilde
 Age Group: Adult

You were always there. Watching and smiling. Giving me hugs when I was little. More hugs yet as the years went by. Walks back to the spring at the back of the pasture. Rides on the tractor, as ornery as it was. Camping and toboggan rides. Hockey and trains. Molasses in a little mustard glass on the table. These things still echo fresh in my mind. I see you in your waders, fly rod in hand. A flick back and a snap forward. Letting the salmon have his run, In the middle of the Nashwaak river. Homemade bread and molasses cookies. A pretty damned good cook for a man. A lover of horses, which you passed on to me. The smell of the barn, horse liniment like pink peppermints. Your lantern swinging from the caboose, As the train made it’s way upriver. Your light a beacon in the night, Letting us know you were there, and all was well. Like the lantern, your love was always a beacon in the dark. A safe place from the injustices in a little girl’s world. I knew when I last saw you that your time was near. Your butterfly came to me a few days later. I was not there with you that last morning, But your butterfly was here again with us. There was solace in its presence, Though I cried that Grampies are supposed to live forever. Going back home and standing in the yard, Your butterfly again came to me from the back of the pasture. Perhaps from the spring? At the cemetery it appeared again. From behind the crowd it came to me. Paused at my shoulder as if to say goodbye and was gone again. I smiled through my tears, The black and yellow butterflies let me know That you were still there with us, And that Grampies do live forever after all.
