Don't Waste Your Time

Don't bother
to shush him in the ear,
or tell him your
cherished thoughts
or comfort him and silence
his childish moaning
You only free him long enough
for a gasp of air
before the waters
rush over him again,
like a black sea
where your secrets are smashed
carelessly, against the rocks
Don't feed him artistry when all he's looking for
is to be blinded for an hour,
blinded to the pile of things he fears:
the dreams he can't quite face,
the face under that veil,
the ends he can't quite make meet
to get that full circle.
And watch out tomorrow darling, because
he fears you most of all,
for showing him up like this.
