Dream Paths

by Kissing Wind
 Age Group: Adult

I stood alone within the mists, The Faery realm of Lyonesse, When through the fogs a voice did call, And took a form no eye could see.
"Who are you?" I cried out to her, "Why are we here? How came this to be?" She stayed oh so silent, yet her answer apparent, "Can you not tell I am your destiny?"
I peered into the mists, which crept along the ground, And I realized that around me were A dozen songs and sounds. I raised my head and asked her Just what she seemed to be. She laughed again and told me That there was nothing I would see.
The mists began to clear then, And the moon hung in the sky A million stars soared overhead And her figure stood at my side. Her presence overwhelmed me But I felt safe with naught to hide.
Though she was a person Three faces did she bear: Aging from young maiden to decreipt crone Every face she bore was fair. The Maiden held a sword of steel, Created by the fires of Earth The Mother, a ruby cup With the waters of rebirth. And finally the dark crone In her hands bore the pale full moon To her I looked and wondered If my answers would come soon.
We stood alone together At a path with many roads Which had borne so many people, Who had borne so many loads. I looked out all around me, And then right back at Her, And I remembered the voice that had spoken To me with such allure.
"Which road am I taking?" I asked, Feeling so confused But She smiled at me and asked me How many I had moved. I asked about my destiny And she said it mattered naught, For all paths were the correct ones, And all were those I'd sought.
So, I looked ahead and saw That many roads were dark. The shadows fell all around them And the trees were dead and stark. I looked at She who changes, Transforms, and so preserves And for a moment I wondered If I was betraying the God I served.
She heard my thoughts and laughed, A sound like twilight's dawn, And I realized that in this place The Gods' faces were one song. So I looked to her and asked Where the dark roads would lead, And she spread her arms and told me That if I chose that, to proceed.
Then I looked towards the other paths, Full of life and greenery, And once again I asked Her Where these paths would lead.
Once again She smiled, And said I couldn't see, For although all paths led away They were all paths I would lead. "That is the way of destiny, Always changing what can be. For every road is taken, And every one ignored. Every one is hated, And every one adored."
And again that strange voice came to me, Speaking from my heart. The only way to meet with Her Was for me now to depart. And for a moment She stood beside me, My shadow and my friend. Undefinable, but ever present. Beside me 'til the end.
The Goddess smiled then, And raised sword and cup and moon With a laugh like sunlight She said she would see me soon. Yet still I asked where the path would lead, And that voice within, She laughed at me. "Some walk the paths, some run the race, But all paths lead back to this place." For that is the path of dreams.
Author's Notes: Based upon a dream that I had many years ago, this poem is a personal reflection to the path that led me back into the arms of the Goddess after a rather dark period in my life. When the Goddess calls, listen, for she shall work wonders in your life and teach you the paths of wisdom.
