Love

I suppose it would be foolish
for my unromantic brain
to moan for suns and stars,
and a rose by any name.
And it seems unnecessary
to describe the thumping in my chest
(may it be my lonely heart)
when I imagine your caress.
And, as you know, I do not sigh
or weep, bemoan, with lust-filled eyes.
Not a lady; in her ivory tower,
longing for a knight in silver armour.
And lust, the red-hot poker,
is easier expressed
than love and adoration,
or whatever else I missed.
But, I beg you just to listen,
to what they may call love,
the ineffectual silence
of my usually rabid tongue.
Because there is no other word
- not anywhere to be found -
that best describes the body’s need
to be held, consumed... and loved.
Author's Notes: I wrote this poem for my husband when we were first dating about 7 years ago - all my friends tell me it is "unmistakably you".
