Nightmare Lake

Monday night
a dreamscape Lake
three of us go swimmin’
only me and two wonderful women
One I feel I know so well
though I’ve never seen her face
The younger one I barely know
we just rode horses once together
- at a thrilling pace
Mild night
‘stars shining bright
a very pleasant lake
‘lest you go too far out, and to the right
then your life it is stake
Treachery,
it lurks there
below the surface, underneath
a dreadful snag, a work of Men
a trap, the devil’s teeth
O beautiful girl
why did you dive there on a lark?
we watched you gracefully descending
we saw you swallowed by the dark
Horrible minutes
turn’d to a sorrowful hour
and we knew that you were lost.
Nature makes a delicate flower
sometimes She takes it with his frost
So alone we’re left there standing
shivering underneath the stars
wishing for some impossible landing
for this young friend of ours
We felt so utterly helpless
‘seemed there was nothing we could do
and all that I could mumble was
“Thank the Gods it wasn’t you!”
