I did something that I’ve never done
in a dream I had this week
Something so brutal and astounding
I’m not so sure that I should even speak
But it could not be avoided
it was either him or it would be me
it was one part self-defense
it was two parts a mystery
It had started out so beautifully
a sweet walk with my old love
She was proudly showing me her gardens
- the ones we used to both dream of -
They were the gardens of her lonely toil
Her work with Nature was amazing!
a diversity of animals and plants, amidst the rocky soil
and all around us, on the wing,
a symphony of birds did sing
I had always loved her creative ways
there is no doubt that this was true
but when I saw how she had filled her days
I knew I never should have felt so blue
About her inexplicable departing
- the thing i never understood -
Now I dreamed she’d given me up for gardening!
and Hallelujah that felt good
Now, me, I never did appreciate
the unnatural order of a garden
but somehow she’d managed to re-create
an Eden that made my heart un-harden
Then to the Orchard she walked me
Showed me a lovely child in a dress
Collecting blossoms from an apple tree
with her Fawn, doing the same, no less.
It was truly the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen
- that fawn, the little girl - their Oneness -
I cried for them, in this sweet dream
Tears of profound happiness.
Now break back to Reality
this woman, my dear friend,
She’d been tormented by some demon
- the thoughtless hand of powerful men -
I knew that, when I’d loved her so,
‘promised her I’d never let her fall...
but one day she lamed me with a bullet
left me languishing in a miserable stall.
On the 366th day I’d been trapped there
I dreamed that I was not alone
I discovered that we’d both been held captive here
by an evil man, who to me was unknown.
I guess it wasn’t really a dungeon
that I thought just for me she had used
It was the stall she’d also been trapped in
since her childhood days (she’d been abused) .
She hadn’t really yet got to her gardening
she hadn’t really yet fulfilled her dreams
and the Fawn that she loved, twas left drowning
in a pool, though she’d heard all its screams.
I didn’t know who this man was
that kept us all there, down below
But I knew if I didn’t slay him
We’d all be drowned in his undertow.
It wasn’t a sword that I used, dear.
It was whatever I had at hand
So with an electric fence post I skewered him
When it was time to make a stand.
Dreams can seem so powerful and real:
I felt the resistance from his shirt
We felt the catharsis of the steel
When it slid through into the dirt.
I woke up shaken the next morning
A bittersweet day, at best
It had been a year of sleepless Sundays
But finally I felt we all could rest!
Author's Notes: This poem came about when a storm of apparently independent signs, written words, and real life coincidences converged last week, culminated with a horrible dream (some dreams are be difficult to ignore) . I just hope it made no readers feel as uncomfortable as it made me. Don’t let it. Life is mysterious. Celebrate it always in kindness.
