The New Sixth Element

A billion years of evolution
never prepared us for shrink wrap
its new on the scene of pollution
and its being used on so much crap
We evolved in the world of the organic
fed by rock, air, water, sun and mineral
And though I don’t want to make you panic
what we’re now doing to the Earth is criminal
You see the students who train their microscopes
on the beaches of the world’s oceans
Are finding plastic sand there,
they're thinkin we’re such dopes!
for packaging everything in plastic...
...everything: knives and produce; ropes and lotions...
Throw it away, but plastic never really leaves us
it just breaks down into pieces smaller and smaller
So now two hundred new chemicals - in uterus -
Is there no end to the harm we’ll do for the dollar?
Tell me why a metal hammer or plastic boat
needs to be packaged in goddamn plastic wrap?
Tell me how a plant, or worm, or goat
can assimilate the consequence o’this chemo-trap?
Against bacteria, viruses, and dirt, kids still stand a chance
(that stuff at least we have all evolved with)
But in our life a new sixth element makes its entrance
threatening to make natural health a future myth
A billion trillion bits of plastic
moving through soil, waves and wind
ten million kids allergic and asthmatic...
Who’s even aware of the depth now sinned?
