Oh Brother Bear

Oh Brother Bear
why did you do it?
Why could you not just let him be?
Why not just let him rest in peace?
That old dog meant all the world to me.
I interned him there just days ago
‘wrapped him in a buck’s good hide
‘anointed him with game bird feathers
from the many hunts we did imbibe
I loved that dog, Oh Brother Bear
He had been such a faithful partner true
And I’d felt good about our parting -
‘never thought he’d be unearthed by you.
I cried the day I laid his body down
though such a good life he did have
One thousand birds he’d flushed for me
He demanded so little for all he gave
It was mere days ago I buried him
laid him gently into Her shallow rocky ground
‘sent him off with poem and all he’d need
for the eternal hunt where he’d be Found.
But Brother Bear
I did not count on you
to unearth him from his rocky grave
No, I did not count on you
to scavenge and devour his remains.
And though at first this shocked me
- seemed like such indignant sacrilege -
The more and more I thought about it
the happier I am for all of us.
