These Whispering Walls

Now in the cold, I again sit
inside our once-enchanted cottage
So empty now, and so dimly lit
so like my heart: conserving wattage
The silence here: now over-powering
though the rain falls gently outside
In my heart every drop is now showering
sweet memories of you my lost bride
This place, now, so damned haunted
by the passionate ghost of me and you
I promised all that you ever wanted
that - and more - You offered me too.
I always loved this musty old place
our rustic shelter away from the storm
But not since it was lit by your smiling face
has it ever been so bright, nor so warm.
The timbers here hewn from virgin trees
- themselves now five centuries old -
These walls whisper much of love’s tragedies
they say ours the saddest tale yet told.
Yet as I stoke the season’s first fire
and its heat turns ice water to steam
I find enough Warmth here to inspire
in the flame enough Light to still dream.
I look again at these old wooden walls
and I say “yes, but this story’s not done…
We’ll walk yet again through Love’s hallowed halls
when the Son through Her Darkness has shone.”
