A Horned One's Death (Moonless Samhain Night)

by Cernunnos Poetry

Age Group: Adult

Samhain 2005

What am I doing
out here in the woods,
in the utter blackness of night again?
This darkness that swallows me now -
am I wandering the vast county forest
or are these the dark woods in me?

What wounded horned one
are you hunting down tonight?

It is somehow fitting though
this macabre search tonight
for a drop of blood
on an endless sea of red maple leaves
on this dark moonless Samhain night.

I am lost again, of course.
It can’t be helped on a night like this
- magic anniversary of such memories -
and not one star to light the way
through this rocky roadless sea of trees.

At least I have my lantern this time
- That’s something special -
Like a shining goddess illuminating
at least my immediate surroundings.

She can’t tell me where I’m going
of course
But Her light is surely comforting,
(though it makes the blackness beyond
a little bit forbidding)

But I must confess, Love
the way this Light shines tonight
dancing with rich forest textures
contrasting bright against black shadow,
on a swirling ever-changing stage
I am lost in the beauty of This
and thinking of You.

Without Her Light
it would be hopeless out here.

There can be no turning back now
of course
I have no idea where home is
anymore
But it could not be more lovely night
to be lost in the woods
Trailing the dying Horned One's blood
on this endless sea of red maples leaves
on this dark moonless Samhain night.

Hopefully the rain will hold off
a little while longer
‘til your search has reached its end
However it turns out for you...

What an extraordinary wind tonight
Did anyone feel it?
Almost imperceptible
many little gentle downburst breezes
barely strong enough to whisper
among the lingering dry aspen leaves.
Like when someone rushes briskly by.
They are all still here with us of course.

Ahhh! Yes!! Here!
Crimson flash on crimson maple leaf
the fluid sign you ’ve been hoping for.
First ruby drop of blood,
shining promise,
lead me to many more of you
show me a torrent of glorious you
Take me to this dying Horned One!
So I can take his body Home.

Precious ruby droplet
I mark this place
where you were found.
You will be my beacon now
To guide me through
this dark moonless Samhain night.

One year ago this sabbat night:
Do you remember how Blood
stained the eclipsed moon Red?
How it danced tantric in the sky
Before the lone wolf howled
over the lake without paddlers?
Just as we knew it would.

Do you remember how it danced...
how impossible
and hopeless
and beautiful that was?
We were both so utterly lost then.

Now, this moonless sabbat night
You have a direction to follow
on this new sweet trail
of blood red bitter Hope

We spoke with our hearts tonight.
And we are both now smiling inside.

Oh Blessed moonless Samhain night
This is about merciful transformation!

Through this pitch black forest
I would be lost still in this wilderness
were it not now for this Light
and this glorious faint red line of gore
on this endless sea of red maple leaves
on this dark and moonless Samhain night.

Shadows looming large
spinning behind towering trees
dancing between jagged rocks
They will not swallow you or me.

One drop here
Another crimson drop there
- a sure blood trail now -
Oh the beautiful gore now
of major arterial hemorrhage!.
It won’t be long now...

Here!
Take this back
your bloodied broken arrow.
Bring it to your lover tonight.

Ahh, the blood that dripped thin
now a screaming streaming sign
where it ran thick onto the ground
I am so Light headed now
I know we are so very close
To Him, to our destinations now.

There! In the hollow
between the jagged mossy rocks
behind that old pine log
Her Light playing still off antler.
Here is The Body of your deer!
Dead He is!
Oh wondrous Samhain Night.
This all feels so right
again.

But just whose blood is this
spilt back into Her Earth tonight?
And would this have turned out differently
had I not sought Her help,
had She not graciously
answered my call?

God, help me
I am still so in love
with Her...

What exactly did She kill
on this dark moonless Samhain night?
This horned one lying now on the ground...
- Just whose blood did She spill? -
