The Famines

The Famines

It was a Goddess sent potatoe blight
That then made our hard lives go wrong
But Time and Faith sets all things right
And that which kills not makes us strong
Though once forced to the Old World's edge
By Christian priests and Roman swords
We survived fusing their lies with knowledge
Blending Her secret books with their Lord's word
We'd made Old Ireland the last stronghold
Of Her old earthly balanced Celtic ways
With bowed heads doing as we were told
While our Free spirits seized those rocky days
It was a Goddess sent potatoe blight
That then forced us poor to leave or die
To forge this New World rising up in might
Built on Irish sweat and old souls on High
Who knew She'd send a lowly fungus
To transform and spread our Celtic history
From here where all before still walk among us
Preserving instead Life, our Love, and Mystery
