Despite Your Reason

The world exists without your reason
These birds and trees don't think at all
Yet they are so perfect in each season
From spring birth unto death's fall
The rocks and rivers do not need us
To prove to themselves that they exist
And our high thoughts will never feed us
Though on barrens lowly lichens persist
No grass grains ever grew for us
Though we like to think that it is so
Yet wet wasteland frogs put up a chorus
Before you drained their homes for a hoe
Migrating ducks don't take directions
And spawning salmon just plain are
They do not think to make connections
Nor do they wish upon a falling star
I'll still live beyond your rationale
And I will love you more than you could know
I'm not confined by boundaries national
And despite your reasons I'll still grow...
