There is stillness in the air tonight
Like the cold peace I feel inside
Not the gentle calm of life's spring breath
No, its acceptance of our summer's death
There's dark shadows looming tall tonight
Against the crisp horizon's fading light
Like blackness born of clear skies blue
Its how I felt just going on without you
There is silence falling on the land
Upon late summer's final aster stand
As if old questions have been answered
By passing geese I shift our glance toward
There is a coldness in the air tonight
Like the killing autumn frost's first bite
Like when cruel indifference in a bitter heart
Gives to sweet acceptance though we are apart
There is new freedom in this evenings air
To run my hands through autumn's lovely hair
While you look on in long disbelieving stare
Knowing winter nights return our May days fair
