By The Fire
It was dusk when I found her camp, a small campfire with a few sticks of wood and an ornate staff leaning against the stone she sat on.
I was full of self pride surely she would be impressed after all ...
I... a busy young woman had undertaken this long and difficult journey to the Wise Women's camp.
She was not beautiful and in the firelight looked harsh, She was not young or wealthy.
I knew she would take my coin
I called out from the outer circle ..
"Hey old woman, I have come a long way and endured much for you to teach me all you know."
What did I expect?
Gratitude perhaps..after all who was she no one really..
What I got was silence.
She sat and stirred the embers with no comment at all though the grip on her staff tightened.
"Did you hear me old one I have come"
"So I see "
was all she said...
"I am taking no students" she said softly...
"Impossible!!"
I cried loudly .."I have the Gift and I demand all you know..Teach me now
And I will be a great witch"
As I gazed at her in anger and confusion I saw that she wept
"You demand my knowledge
And I so Need to pass it forward in time..
But you will hear nothing I say.. Leave me alone now there is nothing here for you."
and so She waits
silently by the fire perhaps till the end of time
