Pore Wee Mite

by Doyenne Solace Arcanna ShadoeWalker

Age Group: Adult

Pore wee mite

Old Mrs Warren she stops in the street
to have a wee chat with Miss Quiffs
While Old Father Jon looking so sadly on
She said quite loudly 'tween sniffs
"Ach aye ..such a pore wee mite that she was , so full of sunshine and light
With a tear in her eye as she tightened her shawl"twas a joy that's a loss to us all."
Then as she nodded Miss Quiffs told her tale
"You know that I've heard that her pore Ma took the veil"
they say bereft folk oft react just like this
then with a hiss shakes her head , tsk tsk tsk" my poor Sis"

Then Old Father Jon he wearily walked on
till by the chapel gate He watches
the flurry, the flowers, the hurry, the bustle
that comes with the chore
and he calls the young cleric to come
and visit a spell as he rests by the garden gate door
"Will we be ready in time ? We must not disappoint.
tis the last chance you know
that the village has now to rejoice.
She'll be looking down on us sure
for you know that its up, not down for her".

In silence the two sat together in grief, as they weighed the great loss to them all
The young cleric nodded sadly, but strongly he vowed
Father Jon we will not let you down

In the high street they wept and in the shops too
Everyone had something to say
Oh , such a smile and dimples and curls and a laugh that would ever outshine
but its her innocence Lord , that we will miss most of all and never again will we find

And at last the day came and the bells they did peal not in joy but in horrible grief
All in sun days best they did walk the long walk to the churchyard so grey and desolate deep
With poor Father Jon at the head of the throng
they did all gather round that small hole in the ground

and then your eye will wander toward an odd heap ...
Wait ... that shadow... right there!!
the one over there petite with such neat plaited hair
and angry small fists jammed hard on slender wee hips

While the wind snatches phrases away
.." too soon and too fair.
That pore wee mite,
you know that she'll sit right next to Saint Mike!!"

... and there's a glint in her eye and a self satisfied smile that plays sweet on her lips
then with a determined stamp of her foot you hear a soft clear voice admit

That's just how it'll be They'll be so sorry you'll see
It will serve them all right ... when I'm dead!
