A warm September sun is setting
O'er limestone swamps where gentian blooms
Within its diminished Light I am regretting
Darker nights when our descension looms
A milder evening breeze is whispering
Above the bitter roots of gentians bloom
Thoughts meld with katydids now vespering
Despite all what my attentions presume
There are wolf-hounds tonguing yonder
Beyond love's purple swollen gentian blooms
This evening sky is so full of mystic wonder
I'll not be held down yet in dark detention rooms
A glorious cricket chorus is now rising
All around fine fringed gentians bloom
I'm drawn by purple wisps o'er the horizon
Not to the deaths our dark intentions doom
It's in the waning that you lose the chase
While still-closed dying gentians bloom
Though I could not discern your truest face
Let in this new moon's ascension illume
Author's Notes: Both fringed and bottle gentians are in flower here. The abundant closed gentians are waning. The rare and more delicate fringed gentians are waxing.
