The Black Horses in my Head

O
Woodsmoke hangs still in cold air tonight
And there's nine soft pillows on my four-post bed
There’s hard lake-ice forming under moonlight
And there’s black horses wanting in my head
Sometimes you shine haunting from above
Then this old house fills me lost with dread
For these log walls and sills exude our Love
But you’d deny always thrill-words we once said
Here warm inside five candles burn on bright
There stark outside unhitched an empty sled
Fireside I write again aglow bewitched in flight
Astride we ride again black horses in my head
At times my heart-poems leave me yearning
Sometimes I scribe in pools dark pure blood red
But through these mystic rhymes I’m learning
Of crimes unto which men are often astray lead
There is sage smoke wafting chilled in twilight
Through veins course seven old grandfathers bled
Here screams heaven ‘no end to us' in mortal sight
While bold black horses dream still in my head…
