Famine Moon

Playful river otters on snow banks just slide
As eagles care-free soar through cloud wisps high
Black vultures energized on warm thermals glide
While poor white-tailed deer strive only to survive
Though spared a kinder autumn death by hunters’ gun
Shared once dry Samhain chase with hounds-at-tongue
Deer now terrorized by hungry wolves are snow-crust run
And fortnightly by winters farm dogs killing just for fun
In moonlit gatherings coyotes yip to grey wolf howls
Nearby a stealthy cougar lithely walks and deathly prowls
Black crows night roosted fearing only great horned owls
While dark famine stalks snow-bound fawns and fowls
White wintering snowshoe-hares just sit still to hide
As Death takes grouse-lives quick when goshawks dive
While house-bound bears and ground-hogs stay inside
Northern white-tails lose such body weight, barely alive
Red squirrels fighting over horded pine seeds chatter
Snow-burrowed voles get by on old clover and tree bark
Outside not one cold red wolf nor hawk nor fox gets fatter
Below this famine moon stalks deer slow in deathly dark
