Beneath our mounts bloodroot is blooming
To this year’s blessed first summer-like day
But far off dark thunder clouds are looming
Above gray yonder a storm front heads this way
Come make haste – its for the best
You’ll note song birds have fallen silent
There’s a long gray wall seething in the west
Soon this zephyr breeze turns to tempest violent
We’ll have to gallop on for our safe stable
Look, black horizon trees are whipped now thrashing
Take flight in this instant – we will be able
To reach back home before the storm comes slashing
What fair time we have is proving thin
But at this fast pace, we will make our shelter
Just before the gale’s front comes moving in
Cutting so close to Death’s breath we felt Her!
We reach the quiet barn in striking lightning
Our black noble horses a bit mental yet sane
Were we riding Whole then ‘fore a storm frightening
Or like swollen watercourses after a gentle rein?
