Solstice Roads of Gold

Solstice Roads of Gold
Summer Solstice 2009
Once these roads seemed paved with gold
By kings’ empires long since fallen
White pines now line these lanes of old
That still shine this solstice morn with pollen
Once these fields grew red fife wheat
Worked by horse & settlers long since gone
Young forest life obscures their fencerows neat
Rising from shadows where solstice suns once shone
Once harnessed too were there pristine streams
Laid waste dammed they were by hands of man!
Hence salmon returned to clear spawning dreams
God’s fish make haste despite men’s ‘grander plan’
Once these woods were laid down low
Felled first by ax-men then by farmers’ fires
Again tall trees shade our Mother’s herbs below
Thus burst orchids sheltered from His hard sun pyres
Once these roads seemed paved with yellow gold
There noticed I the proud king’s daughter kissed
Since pastures green grow trees from fallow old
Where solstice woods shroud spring water in the mist
