Balsam fir and broken cedar
Deer musk aloft and damp leaf mold
The empty forest's full of scents
When the air lies still and cold
Saddle soap and bridled dubbin
Wet leather and snow-covered wool
Dry pine needle beds and sweet fern
Winter's sent towards heaven's pull
Swamp sense and woodland decay
And camp woodsmoke in the distance
The empty forest's full today
For all senses in this instance
Red blood steaming on cold Earth
Black powder and blue gun oil
Death's winter scent brings spring birth
'Fore hard frosts kill not the soil
Balsam fir and broken cedar
Deer musk aloft and damp leaf mold
The empty woodland's full of scent
When winter air is still and cold
