Woodsmoke and wet leather tack
Lathered horse sweat and deer flies
Distant thunder rumbling out on hack
Under fire 'neath grey tumbling skies
Licking flames through gentlest rains
Gathered braided reins in hand
Soaring overhead two sandhill cranes
Pouring love or dread upon drenched land...
Meadowlarks and grey tree frogs
Merge in chorused flood along the edge
Between grasslands and wood's morning fogs
We ride green pastures through dark knowledge
Brown thrashers and grey catbirds
At this forest intersection breed
Down last year's trail's beyond our words
Haunting horsemen 'twixt "shoulds, wants & needs"
Woodsmoke and wet leather tack
Lathered horse sweat midst deer flies
Distant thunder rumbling out on hack
Under fire 'neath grey tumbling skies...
