The Warrior’s Eyes Narrowed

The warrior’s eyes narrowed
Knuckles white on the hilt of his raised sword
There was something moving below a moment before
Life stirring in the rising cloud of dirt
A smoldering flame burns the warrior’s heart
His lips thin to a grim slash of irritation
Immortal were his foe, to his disappointment
He, too, had found them to be so
The learning had quenched his thirst for the moment
And the gleaming blue stone rested on his chest
The prize of the night’s sufferings
Welded in the black depths of power
His foot grinds the stones below as he draws himself up
The taste of metallic sand grows stronger in his mouth
As his teeth clench he can feel them chisel under the force
But the rest of him is as relaxed as a summery tree in the wind
A firm resolve is unfolding within
Something is stirring again
A flash of metal and the warrior’s legs twist away
A leap into the sky and a dive below
Sword met with sword
Eye catching the fiery pit of the demon’s gaze
The warrior flashes his teeth with a cruel smile on his lips
The demon lets out a throaty laughter that sends the warrior chills
Unseen, but not accompanied by fear
The scent of blood livens in the warrior’s mind
And his will forces his blade to make a move
The demon is cleaver, but the warrior is persistent
Soon the Lords of the Grave gather like the hungry ghosts they are
Waiting to feast tonight on either flesh
And breathe the icy sentence of claim
To separate spirit from the body
But also arriving was something else, blinding in radiance
Yet as black as the depth of the sea
Dark and without eyes, but sees with every pore on its body
It senses the feud of a heart and a lump of coal
Where a heart should have been
It feels the presence of the Otherworld penetrating the veils
Without admittance they have gathered around the fighters
Impatient for the lack of such a savory perishing
The war of the Gods begins above the warrior’s head
As his own battle falls into a meaningless silence
Even his demon foe stops to watch the events change…
