Nostalgia

How can I avoid those questions
That keep occurring to me
When I’m alone
And I feel
The past breathe beside me
No longer behind me
And suddenly
We merge
I am within that surge of emotion
The lost things that I’d forgotten
The dreams that I’d almost lost
Not for their lack of completion
But for their met needs, now lost value
The value of not having someone
The freedom that no one can carry
I marvel about the then
When I walked up those slopes
The last time, almost
The time I’d waited for
To get over with
Nervous, yes… that I am
And… to think
That it all started so dark
And finished
So light, lighter than anything
And yet… its ancient quality hangs
Around my neck
And pulls me to the ground…
